If you’ve got this far, you should know a little about CAMRA.  But what does it do in Calderdale?  And why should you join? CAMRA works at a local, national and international level to champion the interests of beer drinkers and pub goers.  Of course, this means we also support the breweries that produce, and the pubs that sell, traditional beer.

BEER:  Real ale offers flavour, quality and choice to the drinker.  Awards for Beer of the Year promote the individual winners as well providing a boost for all beers. Brewers are encouraged to produce tasty beer that people will enjoy drinking.  With more and more of the big British breweries owned by multi-national conglomerates, we need to ensure that the remaining independent breweries stay close to their roots and continue to produce beers that people want to drink.  The explosion of microbreweries across the UK has increased the range and type of beers brewed.

PUBS:  In Calderdale, CAMRA has helped to highlight pubs whose future is threatened.  Locally, several pubs have closed in recent years, particularly in the more rural areas.  When a local campaign group has been set up, practical and moral support has been given. But the best support of all is drinking real ale in the pub to increase its viability.  Members of Halifax and Calderdale CAMRA choose Pubs of the Season and a Pub of the Year to highlight pubs that are promoting real ale.  Certificates are presented to the pub in question at a (very) social evening.  Nationally, great effort has gone into lobbying the government to reform licensing and planning laws.  But this can’t be done without the help of CAMRA members across the country.

EVENTS, MEETINGS and TRIPS: Halifax and Calderdale CAMRA have a meeting on the first Thursday of the month, plus one or two other events.  These can include visits to a local pub, or a pub crawl.  There are trips to real ale breweries, beer festivals and visits to other parts of the country to sample their local beers.

BEER FESTIVALS: There are nearly 150 CAMRA run beer festivals throughout the UK and beyond every year.  Members can work at these festivals, or just go along and enjoy themselves, often with reduced price, or even free, admission.  In Calderdale, there is a CAMRA beer festival in May and various others throughout the year.

BOOKS AND OTHER PRODUCTS: CAMRA members choose the entries for the best selling Good Beer Guide every year – you can get to see your own words in print.  There is a generous discount on the cover price for members.  There are dozens of other books and guides, as well as other CAMRA products, all of which can be bought by members at a reduced price.

WHAT DO CAMRA MEMBERS GET?  CAMRA members receive a copy of the lively newspaper What's Brewing every month.  There's news of breweries, beers and pubs from all over the UK, plus features on beers from around the world.  It also contains information about all CAMRA beer festivals, meetings and social events.
